World Cup Commercials

As my final post before the blog is due, I want to follow up on my previous blog post about ESPN and U2 teaming up to advertise for the 2010 World Cup. I posted ESPN's announcement of the merger and here are 3 of the commercials that have been airing.

The first one is the most showed, it is set to "City of Blinding Lights" and features footage of the 2006 World Cup. It basically is the same commercial from 4 years ago, same song even.

The second commercial is called "Robben Island". Set to arguably U2's biggest hit and greatest song, "Where The Streets Have No Name", it documents the prison in which Nelson Mandela was held and the soccer league that was formed there during his incarceration. An unbelieveably powerful place that is a MUST visit, according to a friend of mine who has made the pilgrammege.

The final commercial, set to "Magnificent" and narratted by Bono himself (!!!!), portrays how large of a uniting force the World Cup can be. Bono lists off what the World Cup is not about and then, right as the intro to Magnificent takes off beautifully, he yells out what the World Cup is. "This is about the one month, where we all, agree, on one thing."

ESPN and U2 Partnership

http://www.atu2.com/news/u2-songs-featured-on-espnfifa-commercials-again.html

For the 2006 World Cup, ESPN used U2's "City of Blinding Lights" as the song for the main commercial that advertised the event globally. Well apparantly the partnership has extended to ESPN's coverage of the 2010 World Cup as well. As many of us have probably seen on ESPN, "City of Blinding Lights" is again being used for the World Cup commercial.

But this time around, 3 more ESPN spots for the World Cup feature U2 songs. From ESPN's announcement:

An initial series of four TV spots, set to the music of U2, will run April through June, and underscore the historic importance of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The first of the four, Robben Island, began airing April 7 across ESPN’s networks.
Robben Island communicates the historic nature and importance of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, through the prism of soccer. This spot was filmed on location at Robben Island off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa. It is the site where eventual South African President Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for decades, alongside other political prisoners, during the country’s apartheid era. (Set to U2’s “Where the Streets Have No Name” with Soweto Gospel Choir).
• UNITED conveys the passion for the FIFA World Cup that unites disparate cultures (set to U2’s “Magnificent”).
• The Power of 10 celebrates the honor and burden that comes with wearing the most sacred jersey number in soccer (set to U2’s “Out of Control”).
• Passion captures the excitement that the FIFA World Cup invokes—highlighting the documented “baby boom” that occurred nine months after Germany hosted the 2006 event (set to U2’s “Desire”).

City of Blinding Lights

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd01FObU3Q4

We live in the greatest city in the world. A city overflowing with blinding lights, beautiful people, and many lessons to learn about life. U2 channels everything about New York City and its people into a 5 minute 48 second anthem filled with the uplifiting guitar, inspiring vocals, and passionate drums that are the musical translation of what this city is.
The instrumental first minute itself is one of the highlights of U2's 30 year career filled with Grammys, sold out concerts and masterpiece albums. The soft keyboard, chiming guitar, strong bass, and drums all culminate at the :50 mark to create the best few seconds of music ever created in my mind. But City of Blinding Lights does not disappoint after this euphoric peak.
Bono's vocals are nothing short of beautiful and inspiring. They are filled with lessons he has learned over the years, his voyage into manhood, tributes to his wife, and a reflection on the lit up buildings themselves. All resonating in the chorus, "OH YOU LOOK SO BEAUTIFUL TONIGHT. In the City of Blinding Lights" This song is one of the many classics to be released by this band from the north side of Dublin and if you take anything away from it, just remember that blessings are not just for the ones who kneel, luckily.

U2360 Live From the Rose Bowl

On October 25th, 2009, U2 performed at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles, California. Along with the facts that an attendance record was set for the Rose Bowl and the concert was streamed live and for free over Youtube in real time last year, it will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on June 3rd.
U2 has filmed one or two concerts per tour since 1983, beginning with "Under a Blood Red Sky" from the War Tour and released them on DVD. The Rose Bowl DVD is the first (and possibly only) concert to be filmed for the U2360 tour and if the live stream was exciting, Im guessing the actual touched up DVD will be stunning.
Even though they left "Breathe" off the DVD (the opening song, an energetic f--k you rocker, and one of my all time favorites), I still plan on buying it. For under $20, you'll get to own arguably the best 2 hours in live music around.
